What is Frailty?

Frailty is defined as reduced strength and physiologic malfunctioning that increases an individual’s risk of increased dependency, vulnerability, and/or death.

Risk factors of frailty

  • Physiological changes and diseases associated with ageing

  • Inflammation

  • Sarcopenia

  • Polypharmacy

  • Endocrine disorders

  • Protein-energy malnutrition

  • Social isolation

  • Poverty

  • Self-risk assessment

  • Medical interventions

  • Balance and strength training

  • Balance diet

  • Vitamin D

Screening for Frailty

Look out for any older adults around you if he/she is experiencing any 3 of the following signs and symptoms: 

  • Reduced gait speed

  • Weak grip strength

  • Exhaustion

  • Weight loss

  • Low energy expenditure
